The Webb City Farmers Market is seeking applicants for an internship from May 1 through September 1, with the preferred candidate being available from at least June 10 through August 1.
The position would require approximately 25 hours per week. The internship will provide substantial experience in community organization, managerial, marketing and horticultural skills.
Compensation will include room and board, if desired, and a stipend of $50 per week. The market will, if desired, work with the intern’s school to meet credit requirements.
Duties include:
Working with the Kids Community Garden participants in the garden and in selling at the market. Visiting immigrant farmers once per week to evaluate and advise. Jay Chism, MU Extension agronomist would be available throughout the season to consult with the intern, as would several experienced mentor growers. Assisting with the market on-site as well as visiting growers as needed. The intern would co-manage the Saturday market. The intern would also participate in mid-season inspection visits to market growers.
In addition, the intern could, if interested, organize and manage the market’s volunteer program and special events. Opportunities for communication experience include writing the market's weekly column in the local newspaper and making monthly appearances on a local television station's cooking segment.
The Webb City Farmers Market is recognized statewide for its innovative programs. The market was the first in the state to accept EBT (food stamps), debit and credit using a wireless device. It was named Missouri's first Market of the Year by AgriMissouri in 2003. A producer-only market, it celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2009.
