For small farmers to meet the high demand of locally grown food products in their areas, they need the kind of investment in technical assistance and training that has been very successful in other ag ventures, according to Rich Pirog with the Iowa State University Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Pirog was a keynote speaker Thursday at the Tri State Locally Grown Conference in Quincy, Illinois.
"There has been very little money put on local food and at this point it's been very much a grassroots movement."
He says demand has grown from restaurants, colleges and universities that want to serve locally gown foods, and farmers markets continue to grow in number and size because of the demand. But, Pirog says those are mostly community supported.
