A Pests, Diseases & Weeds Workshop will be held on Sunday, September 9, from 10:00-4:00 on the Drumm Farm, 3210 Lee’s Summit Rd. Independence, MO 64055.
Pests, diseases and weeds are topics you can never learn too much about, if only because nature is always one step ahead of you!
One year you’ve got squash bugs so thick you can’t even see the plant, the next year they barely show up, but the blister beetles, do- in massive numbers. And this year, a lot of us are seeing Cercospora on our beets and chard, there’s downy mildew on the winter squash, and then there is that mystery problem with the tomatoes getting all spindly and twisty…
September is a good month to take some time out of your busy farm schedule to step back and look at the problems, and maybe get a little bit of perspective and sense of hope about how, next year, you’ll be more on top of it all! The day will start with Tim Walters, East Wind farmer and agronomist, talking about weed control options; Megan Kennelly, K-State Plant Pathologist will present a workshop on plant disease diagnosis and preventions/treatments; James Quinn, Regional Horticultural Specialist with the University of Missouri, will show us some typical Midwestern pests and ways to deal with them. Lunch included.
